POLLSTAR LIVE: WILL YOU BE ATTENDING?

I return to Pollstar Live next week. It will be my first in 3 years but perhaps my 15th total. It was the first “grown up” conference I attended. My college used to send me (and pay for) SXSW and CMJ used to pay for panelists to attend. Both had a heavy focus on “alternative music” but Pollstar was for stadium acts and the men attending mostly wore suits! I learned so much from attending years one and two, I volunteered for the next several just to learn even more. To this day, I often feel, I have been able to stay afloat in the crazy waters of this industry but learning the feeding order.. I love to swim and I have an enormous capacity for finding unexplored islands. That has become my specialty over the years. This year I will show off the one-of-a-kind Bike Zoo.

The highlight of the conference is the awards ceremony and it always falls in perfect timing for me, just ahead of my beloved Austin Music Awards. I would love to share the nominees with you and hear your thoughts on who should win this year. Let me know at roggie@rajiworld.com

RAJIWORLD HEARTS LYFT BECUASE LYFT HEARTS MUSICIANS TOO!

my live music love story

Lyft Austin Launches First-of-its-Kind Musician Rideshare Program

To kick off 2018 in the “Live Music Capital of the World,” Lyft is announcing the Austin Musician Rideshare Program, which provides local musicians with free rides to and from their gigs.

Lyft is partnering with local Austin music venues like Empire Control Room, Antone’s, and Stubb’s to help foster an environment in which musicians and the entire local Austin music industry can flourish.

Ryan Garrett, GM of Stubb’s, describes the benefits of the program: “Lyft’s Musician Rideshare Program is a tremendous asset for local musicians. Stubb’s is thrilled to partner with Lyft on this progressive program which will positively impact the lives of local musicians and the entire Austin music scene.”

Stephen Sternschein, owner of Empire Control Room, explains a problem he sees the program solving for Austin musicians: “It’s expensive and difficult to park downtown, even harder for a working musician lugging gear. Parking tickets, towing, and accidents can (and do) eat up every dollar a local musician just made on stage. We ought to do everything we can to fix this.”

This first-of-its-kind program launches during the Red River District’s Free Week, which celebrates local Austin bands with free shows at different venues from January 1 to January 7.

How You Can Help

Use code ATXMUSIC for $5 off your first 3 rides with Lyft and we’ll add $5 to the Musician Rideshare Program fund — just in time for a ride to Free Week 2018!

RAJIWORLD CLIENTS WIN BIG AT BLACK BALL

Austin music patron organization Black Fret announces recipients of this year’s grants

Local music patron organization Black Fret announced the winners of this year’s $18,000 major grants, along with recipients of $5,000 minor grants, on Saturday night at the organization’s annual Black Ball season finale concert at the Paramount Theatre.

The 10 acts receiving $18,000 grants are: Jackie Venson, Warren Hood, Sarah Sharp, Carolyn Wonderland, Bright Light Social Hour, Whiskey Shivers, Eric Tessmer, the Deer, Mobley and Leopold & His Fiction. They were selected by Black Fret members, who pay $1,500 annual dues to attend private functions throughout the year along with the opportunity to nominate and vote on grant recipients.

Another nine acts received $5,000 grants: Akina Adderley, Cowboy Diplomacy, Croy & the Boys, Daniel Eyes, David Ramirez, Greyhounds, Jane Ellen Bryant, Kinky Machine and Los Coast. All 20 acts had been announced as 2017 Black Fret nominees earlier in the year. One nominated act, Black Pistol Fire, “chose to remove themselves from consideration and asked that Black Fret allocate those funds to the other minor grant recipients,” a Black Fret representative said.

Launched in 2014 by Matt Ott and Colin Kendrick, Black Fret has gradually increased the amount of its grants each year. This year’s cumulative total of $230,000 is up from $220,000 in 2016. Recipients must perform tasks such as releasing records or playing shows to unlock the grant money over the course of the following year.

HEART OF THE CITY

I hope all is well in your world!

I’ve once again joined the SIMS Foundation event committee for this year’s Heart of the City: A Celebration of the Cosmic Cowboy on Dec 2 at Emo’s Austin. I’m posting to see if you’d be interested in being part of this annual event that benefits SIMS Foundation and the Austin music family. SIMS provides life-saving mental health and addiction recovery services to Austin musicians, music industry professionals, and their family members and has been around for 23 years!

The SIMS Foundation hosts the Heart of the City event each year to raise awareness and funds for mental health services. SIMS connects over 600 musicians, music industry professionals, and their family members each year to high-quality, hassle-free mental health and substance use disorder services. SIMS helps musicians develop healthy relationships, strong coping skills for stress, tools to tackle depression, and navigates those with substance use problems along a safe pathway to sobriety.

This year’s show pays tribute to 1972, when Willie Nelson brought the hippies and the cowboys together on one stage to play psychedelic country music. The diverse line up and all-star house band (including RajiWorld client Warren Hood) will surely kill it with original takes on outlaw country classics. Performers include Kelley Mickwee, Charlie Mars, James Petralli of White Denim, Carrie Rodriguez, Monte Warden, Warren Hood, Rosie Flores, David Grissom, Jonathan Terrell, newcomer John Baumann, and a special tribute by Martie Maguire of the Dixie Chicks.

Get a feel for the event from last year’s show with this quick, 1-minute video: Heart of the City 2016

Feel free to reach out to me if you are interested or if you have any questions. I hope you will join me! Roggie 512 554 4004

Cocktail Attire: For guys, this dress code calls for a suit with or without a tie or a button down with slacks. For women, short dresses or jumpsuits that are party-ready. When in doubt, wear a little black dress and dress it up with fun jewelry—or, if you’d rather wear color, opt for something bright or sparkly.

PLEASE HELP ME WELCOME SIERRA TO RAJIWORLD!

We are happy to tell you a little bit about new intern Sierra. If you are a local you can expect to meet her at an event sometime soon.

Originally from Salt Lake City, Sierra recently moved to Austin after living in Montana for almost 6 years. She studied marketing, management and entertainment management at the University of Montana and proceeded to work in event operations at music venues in both Utah and Montana upon graduation. After listening to community radio and watching ACL growing up, moving to the Live Music Capital was a natural progression for her. She hopes to further her career in the music industry, and learn some really great skills along the way. In her free time, Sierra loves to go river rafting with her family, practice Pilates, and attempt to learn how to dance from YouTube videos.

We welcome true American Rock and Roll Royalty to RajiWorld. Linda Gail Lewis is an American singer and pianist. Like her brother Jerry Lee, Rockabilly Hall of Fame member Linda Gail Lewis soaked up the sounds of hillbilly music and rhythm and blues in the rural areas of Louisiana. When Jerry Lee began to score hits with “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” and “Great Balls of Fire”, he singlehandedly lifted the family from dire poverty to a life of relative ease.

Linda Gail’s chief inspiration was Jerry Lee, but later, as the era of rock ‘n’ roll came into play, she also tuned into the sounds of Brenda Lee, Patsy Cline, and Lavern Baker.

Linda Gail Lewis’s official recording debut came when she performed as Jerry Lee’s duet partner for Sun Records in 1963. Lewis’s first two solo releases, did well but failed to chart. It was after Jerry Lee mounted his late-1960s comeback via country music that Lewis was able to make it onto the charts. Recording with her brother, she scored a top ten country hit with a version of Carl and Pearl Butler’s “Don’t Let Me Cross Over.” A rousing duet remake of Chuck Berry’s “Roll Over Beethoven,” a staple of her act, followed it onto the charts. The Lewis duo’s 1969 Smash LP “Together”, featured their rowdy duet style on a variety of country standards and rockers. This led to Lewis’s debut solo album for the label, The Two Sides Of Linda Gail Lewis.

In addition to composing material for her brother’s top-selling Smash and Mercury discs, Lewis also garnered an ASCAP award for her song “Smile, Somebody Loves You,” a top 40 country hit.

During this time, Lewis toured almost non-stop as part of her brother’s show. By 1977 she had had enough—she quit the act, married a man outside the music industry and started a new family.

After a hiatus of nearly ten years, Lewis returned to music in the late 1980s, touring briefly with Jerry Lee before belatedly going solo at age 39. Lewis caught a career break when the New Rose label in France released International Affair, her first solo album in 23 years. Well regarded by critics for its raw, openly country sound, the album did not get much distribution in the United States, but put the European rock community on notice that she was available for shows.

Lewis’s biggest career boost came via legendary Irish rocker Van Morrison. Lewis met Morrison at a Jerry Lee Lewis convention in England. After a sound-check jam session, Morrison proposed the collaboration, which resulted in the 2000 Pointblank/Virgin album You Win Again The album reached the pop charts and sold strongly at the duo’s live shows. It became Lewis’s best-selling disc.

Over the next 15 years, Delta Music Hall of fame member Linda Gail Lewis, toured the world constantly. She has played some of the biggest and most prestigious rock and roll festivals. During 2014 Lewis met Rockabilly guitarist Danny B Harvey (Headcat, Rockats) who introduced her to Lanark Records. So during four extremely creative days at Lanark Studios in Lancaster PA, Linda Gail Lewis, Danny B. Harvey, and her daughter Annie Marie Lewis, along with producer / bassist Quentin Jones and Drummer Blair King cut 12 new rocking tunes which was released worldwide on an album called “Hard Rocking Woman” in 2015 by Lanark Records.

NEVER SAVE BEAUTY FOR LATER

JaneandCamile

Nearly every time I meet a dashing rockstar or my gown at a gala receives  a longing look from another women I am in something my friend Jane Booke has designed… “Jane Booke’s love of art and fantasy began as a small child growing up in Bel Air, California. Jane’s mother and stepfather, a renowned geophysicist, were jet-setters who frequently traveled the world collecting art:.Her father was a successful international businessman. With traveling parents and two older siblings away at college, Jane spent much of her time painting, playing the piano and reading stories about mystical creatures. Summer vacations at her father’s villa in the South of France and other European destinations further influenced Jane’s creativity and sparked her love for Renaissance art. During a trip to England one summer, Jane discovered beautiful antique chiffon dresses and decided to create her own designs. She used the sewing room in her home to construct one-of-a-kind pieces for her and her friends to wear.

After attending University of California Santa Barbara, Jane moved to New York City where she pursued a career in acting, modeling and music. She performed in various theatre productions and television shows, and became the lead vocalist for the band Sleeping Beauty. She later moved back to Los Angeles, where she married her husband and gave birth to her first child. Ironically, it was when Jane decided to be a stay-at-home mom that her fashion career began to take shape. With time to sew her own clothes, Jane began filling her closet with her own creations. While at a friend’s wedding, a buyer from Los Angeles boutique Les Habitudes commented on the gown Jane was wearing and, after learning that Jane had made the garment herself, placed an order for several dresses.

Soon, fashionistas all over began clamoring for Jane’s chiffon princess gowns and other fantasy-inspired couture designs. At this time, Jane also began designing a collection of fairy-inspired furniture that included whimsical vanities, thrones, custom swing sets, canopy beds and elaborate dining tables fit for fairy royalty. Jane’s designs are elegant and feminine with a sexy twist; They evoke the essence of womanhood while retaining the Renaissance-inspired nuances for which she has become known.

Jane has dressed numerous notable actresses, musicians and private clients for film, red carpet events including: Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston, Melanie Griffith, Patricia Arquette, Nicole Kidman, Emma Thompson, Faith Hill, Rita Wilson, Maria Shriver, Sharon Stone, Minnie Driver, Courtney Cox Arquette, Lisa Kudrow, Cher, Julie Delpy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Nicollette Sheridan, Eva La Rue, Kim Cattrall, Trudy Styler, Patricia Heaton, Jennifer Tilly and Vivica A. Fox. ” – Michelyn Camen
