NEVER SAVE BEAUTY FOR LATER

Nearly every time I meet a dashing rockstar or my gown at a gala receives  a longing look from another women I am in something my friend Jane Booke has designed… “Jane Booke’s love of art and fantasy began as a small child growing up in Bel Air, California. Jane’s mother and stepfather, a renowned geophysicist, were jet-setters who frequently traveled the world collecting art:.Her father was a successful international businessman. With traveling parents and two older siblings away at college, Jane spent much of her time painting, playing the piano and reading stories about mystical creatures. Summer vacations at her father’s villa in the South of France and other European destinations further influenced Jane’s creativity and sparked her love for Renaissance art. During a trip to England one summer, Jane discovered beautiful antique chiffon dresses and decided to create her own designs. She used the sewing room in her home to construct one-of-a-kind pieces for her and her friends to wear.

After attending University of California Santa Barbara, Jane moved to New York City where she pursued a career in acting, modeling and music. She performed in various theatre productions and television shows, and became the lead vocalist for the band Sleeping Beauty. She later moved back to Los Angeles, where she married her husband and gave birth to her first child. Ironically, it was when Jane decided to be a stay-at-home mom that her fashion career began to take shape. With time to sew her own clothes, Jane began filling her closet with her own creations. While at a friend’s wedding, a buyer from Los Angeles boutique Les Habitudes commented on the gown Jane was wearing and, after learning that Jane had made the garment herself, placed an order for several dresses.

Soon, fashionistas all over began clamoring for Jane’s chiffon princess gowns and other fantasy-inspired couture designs. At this time, Jane also began designing a collection of fairy-inspired furniture that included whimsical vanities, thrones, custom swing sets, canopy beds and elaborate dining tables fit for fairy royalty. Jane’s designs are elegant and feminine with a sexy twist; They evoke the essence of womanhood while retaining the Renaissance-inspired nuances for which she has become known.

Jane has dressed numerous notable actresses, musicians and private clients for film, red carpet events including: Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston, Melanie Griffith, Patricia Arquette, Nicole Kidman, Emma Thompson, Faith Hill, Rita Wilson, Maria Shriver, Sharon Stone, Minnie Driver, Courtney Cox Arquette, Lisa Kudrow, Cher, Julie Delpy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Nicollette Sheridan, Eva La Rue, Kim Cattrall, Trudy Styler, Patricia Heaton, Jennifer Tilly and Vivica A. ACC MBPT AND THE FUTURE OF ROCK AND ROLL (AND RAP, AND CLASSICAL…)

Last night I had the honor of spending a few hours with my colleague Jean Spivey’s wonderful class at ACC as her substitute teacher.  MBPT students are required to take traditional music classes such as Music Fundamentals to address the constants of music as well as classes in music business and technology. There are classes in Commercial Music Theory, Songwriting, Applied Music Lessons and several Ensembles. The MBPT course inventory includes classes such as Survey of the Music Business, Legal Aspects of the Entertainment Industry and five other courses to enhance student’s knowledge of the music business. There are sixteen Music Technology courses including MIDI and Synthesis classes, Live Sound and Audio Engineering, taking students from beginner to advanced levels. While these classes teach the fundamentals of the technology they also address changes as they occur. They also  stay connected to the community recording in-store performances at Waterloo records, student internships at local music businesses (RajiWorld has had many ACC MBPT students over the years) and by providing volunteer opportunities for students at events such as SXSW. The faculty remains connected to the community via live performances in and around Austin and working with local music businesses and charitable organizations. I shared my excitement for Black Fret, SIMS, HAAM and all of Austin’s unique organizations we are so grateful to have available. I was able to hear about each of their current experiences in addition to goals they had for my talk and post graduate level work. Each and every one of these students was engaging and I think an asset to our local business landscape. I learned a lot just being with them. To The Future!

TIGHTENING MY AUSTIN//LA CIRCLE

My very favorite part of booking has always been and still is the showcase. It was a huge thing in the days of full record company support and major label deals. I was the go-to girl to match make the right band to the right fans in front of media and I loved every moment of it. It was the opportunity for 200 or less people to say they were there. This was before social media but word of mouth lasted longer. I have missed everything about it. The moment I stepped into The Townsend I was hopeful and transported back to that feeling. Bands I love will have the chance to be heard with good sound, all eyes on them and with enough glamour on the walk to the show room that the feeling of anything possible can exist again! Thank you Kathy Valentine, Steven Weisburd and Justin Elliot for keeping the dream alive and well and fresh!

I’ve just booked Thursday Oct 22 for the first Austin appearance of The Sisterhood. I hope you will join us!

Linda Gail and brother Jerry Lee grew up in Ferriday, Louisiana along with cousins Jimmy Swaggart (controversial, but world-renowned evangelist) and Mickey Gilley (country singer/songwriter, who gained a worldwide reputation via the movie “Urban Cowboy”). Most of their colorful, but poverty stricken childhood was spent in their hometown church built by members of the family. Their first musical experiences were right there at “The Ferriday First Assembly of God” where Jerry and Linda sang, moving toward what would be their life long career in music.

SIR DOUG AND THE GENUINE COSMIC GROOVE TRIBUTE SHOW

I am honored to produce SXSW’s official Doug Sahm Tribute Show at the Paramount Theatre on Saturday March 21, 2015. The Paramount has about 1200 seats and as it is an official SXSW event, badges and wristbands will be given entry first but there will be tickets for sale to the public as well!

The unsung hero of Texas music, Doug Sahm was country and western child prodigy on steel guitar, a teenage rhythm and blues guitarist who fell under the spell of chitlin’ circuit legends such as T Bon Walker and Gatemouth Brown, and hitmaker with number one radio hits in his hometown of San Antonio when he was still in high school. He rode the wave of the Beatles and the British Invasion with his band the Sir Douglas Quintet, landed in San Francisco in time for the Summer of Love, and planted his flag in Austin at the birth of the Austin music scene, creating his own Groover’s Paradise. Respected as a musicians’ musician, Sir Doug’s greatest triumph was founding the Tex-Mex supergroup The Texas Tornados with his one time mentor Freddy Fender, his lifelong sidekick Augie Meyers, and accordion legend Flaco Jimenez, whom Sahm took from the West Side barrio to worldwide renown.
Join us for the Sir Doug Sahm Tribute Night on Saturday, March 21 at The Paramount Theater. The all-star lineup includes Doug Sahm’s former bandmates Augie Meyers, Flaco Jimenez, and the Texas Tornados, filmmaker Robert Rodriguez and more musicians that he worked with throughout his life.

AUSTIN BIKE ZOO AND PsiPlay TO HELP AUSTIN RING IN 2015!

The theme is Play. Make. Glow. A New Year’s Eve celebration with Live Music, Glow-in-the-Dark Fun, Food Trucks, Fireworks and more!

Austin’s New Year celebration this year will transform Butler Park into a smorgasbord of entertainment and foodie favorites.

Family-friendly entertainment will include an interactive deejay booth, onsite screen printing, Nerdy Derby races, Polka Dot disco party, Dance It Yourself Nutcracker with The Invincible Czars, and a making station to build a half Godzilla/robotic Hello Kitty!

Before the fireworks finale, Austinites can enjoy vintage cartoons, screenings of local films, puppetry by Glass Half Full Theatre, roving displays by Austin Bike Zoo, captivating art installations like PsiPlay, and performances by Brownout, Peelander-Z, Minor Mishap Marching Band, Riders Against the Storm and Mother Falcon.

ALL SOULS PROCESSION BRINGS MILLIONS TO ECONOMY

TUCSON – The All Souls Procession brought 100,000 visitors Downtown and was a big boost to business, according to organizers.

Last year, the event paid for an economic impact study. That study showed the event brought $17,550,000 to the local economy.

The Procession worked its way through Downtown and ended at the Mercado San Augustin.

Many of the participants and spectators are from out of town.

The closing ceremony, police and barricades cost thousands of dollars. Volunteers collect donations along the route. But every year, the event has to raise other funds. People can donate online at AllSoulsProcession.org.

WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS’ PURPOSE?

As the owner of a small business and a staff member at RajiWorld, I am constantly in search of highly successful business owners with the same standards I hold true to my heart. One of my favorite aspects of interning at RajiWorld, is experiencing the ever-growing passion Roggie Baer has for her business; she believes in her work, thus, generating a positive structure in her business model. Another element I fancy is the opportunities to meet credible industry professionals, putting me in an immediate position to present myself in my own sincere fashion.

Today, I was pleased to have met a business owner that still holds to the same standards today as he did when first starting his enterprise, Roy Spence. I was taken by total surprise when I discovered the entrepreneur’s achievements. RajiWorld and Spence share the same model for their businesses in which “purpose sets you apart from the competition, authenticates your brand, inspires passion in your people and helps you achieve the impossible.” A model I aspire to maintain in my young record label. A model that RajiWorld exercises daily. 

How did I come to meet Roy Spence? At Whole Foods Market, of all places, passing out samples of his newest product, Royito’s Hot Sauce. Beyond preaching about having purpose in your business, Spence performs his beliefs by placing himself in a position that ranks his employees as equals. There he was, dripping his hot sauce on shrimp and chips while still finding time to greet newcomers to his station.

Looking back at my encounter with Spence, I realized that no matter how established one may become it is imperative that he/she be a perpetual example for like-minded entrepreneurs, just like me. I bet he didn’t even realize the impact he made on my dreams, making me feel even closer to achieving them. I can safely say I look up to this philanthropist’s practices and will look to his and Roggie’s discipline for constant improvement in my own business.

Louise Goffin to add to stellar Viper Room celebration!

After 21 years on the Sunset Strip, the world famous Viper Room is celebrating its birthday with a week-long bash.

The world-renowned black building opened in 1993 and was celebrated with a invitation-only bash that included Quentin Tarantino, Tim Burton and Christina Applegate. I was there and RajiWorld helped book many provate and public events that first year. That first year, actor River Phoenix died of a drug overdose at the club, but the Viper Room continued to be a popular hangout for Hollywood’s elite. Co-owned by Chuck Weiss and Johnny Depp until 2004, the club has been a launch pad for bands like Muse and Kings of Leon since its inception. It is a venue close to my heart as a friend, agent and in a cute story mother! We are proud to have client Louise Goffin partake in the celebration with songs from her brand new record!

The birthday bash kicks off Monday with R&B soul legend Bettye LaVette. The anniversary party continues through Saturday with shows featuring Steve Stevens, Billy Morrison and Billy Duffy. For more information, go to viperroom.com.

Yes, she has iconic, famous parents, but that story long ago got sick of being told. And besides, it isn’t even the most interesting story to tell about Louise. You wanna hear a great story? Try this: Six years go by with no new albums from Goffin, and then suddenly at the end of 2013 she decides she simply must get one recorded right the hell now. “It was a little like those stories you hear about those pregnant mothers who haven’t got time to go into a fancy hospital with a nurse saying, ‘What number are you on the pain scale from 1- 10?’” she says, describing the birth of Songs From The Mine. “It was more like, ‘What are you talking about? I’ve got no time for this—I’m having this baby now!’” This is also the story about how Songs From The Mine turns out to be, as music writer Jon Kanis wrote, the “high point of Goffin’s professional career.” So far. Making a record wasn’t even on Louise’s radar in October 2013. Rather, she’d been “preoccupied with songwriting and playing live the last year and a half.” Then in November, two months before Louise was to perform at a MusiCares event honoring her mom, that all changed. “What made me go into the studio,” she explains, “was someone saying, ‘Hey if you’re playing at MusiCares it’d make sense for you to have some product out,’ and I thought, ‘Oh yeah, I probably could pull out an EP worth of good songs.’ I was invited to a friend’s house to play songs and it was like, ‘What’s this one?’ and then, ‘That song needs a sister song.’ By the end of the day I realized I had a full album waiting to be created.” Galvanized by this discovery, Louise was recording within days. “The quickness with which I acted was because I had produced A Holiday Carole, so I had had the recent background of me producing a whole record tip to toe and feeling fulfilled by both the experience and the result,” she notes. “I just rolled up my sleeves and said, ‘Let’s do this.’” Released on Goffin’s own Majority Of One Records, Songs From The Mine was predominantly recorded in December 2013 and early January in Los Angeles, with some recording done at the Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, Holiday Music Motel. Goffin produced and played piano, B-3, ukulele, and guitar, and added a touch of snare drum and tambourine. With a lifetime spent soaking up the finest music of her generation and a love of songs that “put you in a movie lyrically, or ones that sound so full of raw attitude that you could forget your insecurities,” Goffin employed a rich palette to fashion Songs From The Mine. Pure nirvana for pop melody freaks, the CD is stylishly arranged and lyrically erudite, with stand-out songs throughout; beginning with the reassuring “Everybody But You” and continuing all the way through to the buoyant “Good Life,” the light and wispy “Follow My Heart,” the playful “Watching The Sky Turn Blue” (featuring Alice Cooper and Johnny Depp on backing vocals and handclaps), the soaring “Get With The World,” the ballsy guitar rocker “We Belong Together,” and the plaintive “Some Of Them Will Fool You” contribute to an album with zero weak spots. Songs From The Mine is the latest example in a career that has been shining ever since Goffin took up the family profession at an early age. At age 14 she first sang on her mom’s record Really Rosie (the musical based on several of Maurice Sendak’s children’s books), and they later dueted together on a new version of King’s “Where You Lead” for the theme song of the hit ’00s TV show Gilmore Girls. As a songwriter and producer of A Holiday Carole, Goffin helped bring her mom back home to her love of making records and put Carole at ease in the studio. Over the years Louise has released five previous albums of her own, the last one coming in 2008, and the highly sought-after producer and go-to songwriter has also toured the world on electric guitar in Tears For Fears. “Years from now, when I conjure up memories from the spring of 2014 I will smile sweetly and remember the profundities evoked by Songs From The Mine,” wrote Kanis. With such an inspired work to offer in 2014, one can be forgiven for hoping Louise Goffin doesn’t make us wait six long years for the next one.
